Derna – Thousands feared dead as Storm Daniel rips through Libya’s eastern region after causing immeasurable damage.
Local leaders of Derna, say there are thousands of people still missing after torrential rains over the weekend.
The Derna Municipal Council reported on its Facebook page that two dams collapsed in the city on Monday.
Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari said that at least 5 000 to 6 000 people were missing in Derna, which has a population of around 100 000.
The numbers may not be accurate as communication is down and there is an existing power struggle between two governments, each backed by their own militias.
However, people are putting their differences aside and trying to take whatever they have and whatever they can do to help those in affected cities.
The Libyan Observer reported that several buildings were washed away by flood waters.
The city’s municipal council calls for international help to evacuate those who are trapped as the only road that leads to Derna is destroyed and cannot be accessed in any way.
Furthermore, the city’s municipal council is also asking for the ports to be open, as more roads collapse.
The world is not being informed of this tragedy as there is no internet, no electricity, nothing – Libya is cut off from the international world.
Libya’s eastern-based parliament declared three days of mourning.
Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, the rival UN-recognised Libyan PM based in Tripoli in Libya’s west, also announced three days of mourning in all the affected cities, calling them “disaster areas”.
Citizens have been urged to follow a strict curfew and schools have been closed.
There is a catastrophe happening now and the world needs to help Libya.
