Johannesburg – A gang of about 20 armed robbers is on the run after a cash-in-transit attack along the N12 on Saturday morning at about 11:25.
Narrating events related to the cash-in-transit heist, National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said: “Maximum resources have been mobilised following a cash-in-transit heist on the N12 in the Mondeor Policing precinct in which a female driver of a BMW was hijacked and kidnapped in the process”.
Brigadier Mathe added: “The lady was forced at gunpoint to drive suspects towards Soweto.
“The suspects got off near Diepkloof and ran towards other getaway vehicles.”
Brigadier Mathe said air support and a multidisciplinary team have also been activated to search for 15 to 20 suspects who got away with an undisclosed amount of money.
“The Gauteng community is requested to be on the lookout for suspects travelling in a black Golf 8 GTI, a blue BMW X6, a white Mitsubishi Pajero, a black Range Rover, and a white Toyota Fortuna,” said Brigadier Mathe.
During the heist, four guards attached to Fidelity were injured and taken to hospital.
One guard sustained gunshot wounds, while the others were injured after their armoured cash van overturned.
The van was prized open by the robbers using explosives.
Police are investigating a case of hijacking and kidnapping, cash-in-transit robbery, and attempted murder.
“Communities are once again reminded not to pick up money from cash-in-transit heist crime scenes as this amounts to theft and defeating the ends of justice,” said Brigadier Mathe.
“Cash-in-transit heist scenes are dangerous and can pose a risk to the loss of life as explosives are often used to blow up these cash vans.”
