Ermelo – Five people died in a head-on collision on Monday along the R35 road between Amersfoort and Morgenzon, outside Ermelo, in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the deceased included one of the drivers and four passengers.

Their names were being withheld – for now – while attempts were being made to inform their next of kin of the tragedy.

Two other occupants sustained serious injuries. One person was slightly hurt.

Mmusi said: “The cause of the crash is still unknown at this point, but dangerous overtaking cannot be ruled out.

“The injured are receiving treatment at the nearby hospital.”

Meanwhile, Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has conveyed sympathies to the families of the deceased and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
