Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Regional Court President Eric Sibusiso Nzimande has appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court facing accusations that he sought and accepted bribes amounting to R230 000 from individuals seeking acting appointments in higher grades.
The 62-year-old appeared in court Thursday on five counts of contravening the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities (PRECCA) Act.
Allegations are that Nzimande, who was responsible for making recommendations to the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services for the appointment of acting regional court magistrates, solicited bribes from the candidates.
It is alleged that between April 2012 and October 2015, Nzimande recommended several individuals to be appointed acting regional court magistrates.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the state alleges that the accused sought and received gratification from each of the individuals he recommended either before, during, or shortly after their appointments.
Nzimande was served with an indictment in court.
The matter was adjourned to 20 May 2023.
