Grade 12 Learner Bitten By Snake While On A School Camp In Mpumalanga Has Died

Mbombela (Nelspruit) – An 18-year-old Grade 12 learner has died after being bitten by a venomous snake while on a school camp in Mpumalanga.

The learner was from Mawewe Secondary School in Matsavana Circuit in Dumphries Village in Bushbuckridge.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education said it was, “deeply saddened by the passing away of an 18-year-old Grade 12 learner who tragically succumbed to a snakebite on Monday night, (27 November 2023)”.

The incident occurred at the school during a Grade 12 camp organised as part of improving the preparation of learners for the 2023 National Senior Certificate Examination.

Mpumalanga Education MEC Bonakele Majuba extended his heartfelt condolences to the learner’s family, school, and teachers during this difficult time.

Learners at the school are receiving counseling.

Majuba will visit the school and the bereaved family today, Thursday, (30 November 2023).
