Johannesburg – A passenger collapsed and died at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) on Friday.
Commenting on the tragedy, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) said it, “regrets to report that a male traveller passed away at CTIA while preparing to board a flight earlier today, (Friday 1 December 2023)”.
ACSA added: “It is understood that the 61-year-old man, whose identity cannot be released until his next of kin have been informed, collapsed on the floor of the check-in area at the domestic departures terminal at CTIA.
“A doctor at the scene performed CPR on the man, and ACSA paramedics responded promptly to the incident.
“Despite all efforts to resuscitate him, the traveller was unfortunately declared dead.”
The area has been cordoned off by the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the deceased’s body was removed from the scene by paramedics and SAPS members.
The cause of death is yet to be determined.
The airport company said the passenger had a boarding pass and was scheduled to fly to Durban at 12:50 on FlySafair.
ACSA said: “The airline is currently contacting the man’s next of kin,” adding that it “would like to extend its deepest condolences to the traveller’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
