Mahikeng (Mafikeng) – The date 5 December 2023 will always be an important one for the radio fraternity in Mahikeng – the once vibrant capital city of the North West.
Today, three radio stations in Mahikeng were given new leases of life.
Mmabatho FM and Mahikeng FM were presented with the new state-of-the-art radio broadcast studios by the Media Diversity Development Agency (MDDA), while Radio Bop Africa officially went on air.
Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, was joined by Deputy Ministers in the Presidency, Nomasonto Motaung, and Kenneth Morolong; as well as MDDA Board Chairperson Professor Hlengani Mathebula when she unveiled the brand new broadcast studios.
The MDDA’s mandate is to redress the exclusion and marginalisation of disadvantaged communities that cannot access media.
The MDDA creates an enabling environment for the development of the media and diversity which reflects the needs and aspirations of all South Africans.
“A community radio station plays a critical role in our society, in a world often filled with noise and destruction,” said Minister Ntshaveni.
“Gospel community stations stand as a beacon of inspiration, unity, and spiritual nourishment.
“First and foremost, the community radio stations serve as a spiritual guide, broadcasting messages of hope, love, and faith.”
Mmabatho FM Station Manager, Pastor Mike Nzweni said the station has 25 staff members – three of them live with disabilities.
Nzweni said that the station is grateful for the new studios, as it will help in the development of the youth.
“This will help the youth in their journalism growth,” Nzweni said.
“The station also provides spiritual upliftment to the listeners.”
A stone’s throw away from the “Home of Gospel”, the revived Radio Bop Africa officially went on air.
The station’s line-up includes Vincent Maseko, George Gill, Tumyza, and Tsholofelo Mokhobo.
