Ekhuruleni – Multiple murder suspect 42-year-old Eugene Botha on Thursday appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court charged with murdering his mother, Jane, father Johan, and sister Suné.
Allegations are that Botha stabbed all three to death before wrapping their bodies with blankets and stuffing their bodies in a bakkie in Rondebult on the East Rand of Gauteng.
The Nissan bakkie was abandoned – with the three bodies in the back – in a field not far from the Botha family home.
The court heard that the bodies, which were in a state of decomposition, were discovered by community members on Tuesday.
It also emerged in court that Eugene Botha has a conviction for fraud.
The National Prosecuting Authority has not ruled out adding more charges to Botha’s charge sheet including three counts of the violation of a corpse as investigations continue.
Suspicions are that life insurance payouts could be the motive for the murders of the Botha family.
Botha was remanded in custody after his matter was adjourned to next Thursday, (11 January 2024), for a formal bail application after he asked for a state lawyer.
Before Botha was arrested a neighbour told television reporters that Botha was a known drug user who had been “kicked out of the UK”.
The neighbour claimed the accused was previously involved in loud arguments with his parents.
However, The Bulrushes could not independently verify any of the claims.
