KaNyamazane – Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for the shooter who gunned down an off-duty police captain at a car wash in KaNyamazane, near Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), on Saturday night.
The trouble was said to have started after another motorist bumped the 44-year-old police captain’s private car at the car wash.
Suggestions were that, following “an agreement”, the police captain took the car of the offending driver to his home as surety for payment of R5 000 to cover the damages.
However, when the police captain returned to the car wash, an argument ensued between him and the motorist whose car he took.
Speaking to The Bulrushes, Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said: “According to the witnesses, it is alleged that during the argument, the suspect took out the firearm and shot at the deceased”.
Captain Sekgotodi added: “He later succumbed to his injuries.
“The suspect fled the scene on foot.”
She said police have launched a manhunt for the gunman.
However, Captain Sekgotodi said it was still too early to divulge the slain policeman’s name because of “an ongoing investigation” and “privacy to the grieving family.”
“We shall release the name afterwards. The team is still busy with an investigation,” said Captain Sekgotodi.
“The police are also requesting Sibusiso Maseko from Mariti, whom they believe can assist them in solving the murder case, to come forward by contacting the investigating officer or reporting to his nearest police station.”
