Pietermaritzburg – The first group of military veterans have received the keys to their brand new houses in Pietermaritzburg, a move that will see them vacate the Aloe Ridge Social Housing Project, which they occupied illegally for years.
The unlawful occupation by war veterans of more than 200 flats at the rental complex in Westgate owned by Capital City Housing appears to be coming to an end.
On Monday, Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Pam Tshwete, and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho Nkosi handed over completed housing units to the military veterans.
Some military veterans voluntarily vacated the units they unlawfully occupied since 2018.
The provincial government picked up the tab after the court issued an eviction order three years later – in 2021.
The remaining war veterans have begun moving to their new houses.
The delegation was also expected to introduce the contractors that have been tasked to deliver housing units for all affected military veterans within 12 months.
