Johannesburg – Shocked witnesses watched as two people jumped from the second floor of a burning building in the CBD Sunday morning.
Onlookers watched from the streets below as firefighters used a ladder to rescue people stranded on a balcony before they recovered two bodies from inside the building.
Commenting on the unfolding situation, Joburg City Emergency Management Services (EMS) said earlier on Sunday they received a call about a residential building fire at Commissioner and Nugget streets, in the CBD and they responded immediately.
“Two people jumped from the second floor, and three people were rescued from the balcony,” said Nana Radebe-Kgiba Spokesperson City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services
“The fire operation continues at the two-storey building that was engulfed with flames earlier this morning.
“Four people have been transported to health care facilities for further medical care. Two dead bodies were recovered from the building.”
Radebe-Kgiba said the fire spread very quickly, affecting different levels of the building.
“EMS will conduct preliminary investigations to determine what caused the fire after firefighting operations are done,” said Radebe-Kgiba.
However, a woman has since been arrested on suspicion that she started the fire after a quarrel with her boyfriend.
