Secunda – Police in Mpumalanga on Wednesday said the decomposed body found hanging from a tree in Secunda, Mpumalanga, over the weekend could be that of the man suspected of fatally stabbing his girlfriend.
The dead man was thought to be a 42-year-old man who was wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, 39-year-old Busisiwe Precious Mkhabela.
The police said Mkhabela was found dead with multiple stab wounds on 2 January 2024.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said Mkhabela’s cellphone and ID were recovered from the body found hanging.
He said DNA tests would be carried out to confirm the identity of the person found hanging because the body had decomposed.
The body was found hanging from a tree near a shopping centre.
“The body could be of a man who was the subject of a police investigation into the murder of Busisiwe Precious Mkhabela who was stabbed to death allegedly by her male companion earlier this month,” said Colonel Mdhluli.
He said an inquest would be launched to determine the exact cause of death of the man found hanging as well as to confirm his identity.
Rumours doing the rounds were that the man may have hanged himself when he heard the police were looking for him in connection with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend.
