Mahikeng – A soldier arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a DJ in Moshawane, in the North West, will apply for bail on Friday.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said 36-year-old Tumisang Mokgolela appeared in the Molopo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where the case against him was postponed to Friday, for a formal bail application.

Mokgolela is facing a count of murder after he allegedly stabbed 32-year-old DJ Tebogo Mogonare to death on Saturday.

Narrating events leading to the fatal stabbing, North West NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame said: “Preliminary reports reveal that on 20 January 2024 the deceased, who was a DJ, was booked to play music at a tavern in Moshawane, near Mafikeng.

“Upon the completion of playing his set, on his way out of the tavern, he allegedly had a conversation with a female patron who was sitting next to the accused.

“This resulted in an argument between the deceased and the accused and subsequently, a fight allegedly ensued between the two.”

Mamothame said Mokgolela allegedly went to his car and returned with a knife, which he used to stab the DJ.

Mogonare was rushed to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital.

He was later transferred to Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Mokgolela, who is believed to be a member of the South African Defence Force, will remain in police custody until the next court appearance,” Mamothame said.
