Pretoria – Police Minister General Bheki Cele on Monday handed over a new fleet of 62 branded cars to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) – better known as the Hawks.
The vehicles were received by Hawks boss Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya and his management at the Promat Building, which is the DPCI head office situated in Koedoespoort, Silverton.
The handover of the vehicles coincided with an update on what the Hawks have achieved in terms of crime fighting.
Briefing reporters on the third quarter of 2023/2024 earlier on Monday, Advocate Lebeya, who is also a Dr., said: “Out of the 229 convictions, fraud contributed the highest number of convictions with a total of 63.
“Precious metals and diamonds are the second highest with a total number of 45 accused.
“Eleven people were accused of money laundering in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.”
He said most of the suspects arrested were locals.
“A breakdown of the arrests per crime category and nationality of the 705 natural people comprises 582 or 82.5% South Africans and 123 or 17.5% foreign nationals.”
