Pretoria – Alert Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD) officers foiled an abduction of a woman they saw being bundled into a car in the Brooklyn area on Saturday.
Narrating the events leading to the freeing of the woman, the TMPD spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, said in a statement that the officers were on routine patrol to prevent cable thefts when they heard a commotion in Hazelwood Street.
The officers went to investigate. They saw two men forcing a woman into their vehicle.
“The TMPD members tried to stop the vehicle but it fled at high speed. A car chase ensued between the officers and the suspects,” the statement said.
“The suspects stopped the vehicle and fled on foot. TMPD officers gave chase and managed to apprehend one suspect.
“The female who was kidnapped confirmed to the officers that they robbed her of her cellphone and were forcing her to give them her banking details.
“The vehicle was tested and was confirmed to have been stolen in Mamelodi with an active case number.”
The number plates that were affixed did not correspond with the license disc.
“The female notified the officers that the suspects threw out a firearm through the window,” said the statement.
“Inside the suspect’s vehicle, sets of number plates, five dummy rounds, and a firearm magazine were found.”
The suspect was arrested and faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, possession of unlawful ammunition, firearm magazine, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The TMPD said its investigation into the matter was ongoing and the officers were looking to arrest the other suspect that got away.
