Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs has been fatally shot during a hijacking.
The footballer was shot dead in Honeydew at a fuel station on Wednesday night.
Kaizer Chiefs said on X: “It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.
“May his dear soul rest in peace.”
Commenting on the murder of Flues and the theft of his car, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni said in a statement: “It is reported that the victim who was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI drove into the petrol station in 14th Avenue, corner Hendrik Potgieter.
“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 series.
“The suspect pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle then shot him once on the upper body.
“One drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice.”
Fleurs was taken to a medical care centre where he was declared dead.
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni said a team had been appointed to search for the suspects.
Condolences have been pouring in from other football clubs, fans and officials.
Cape Town City FC posted a message of condolences on X, saying: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Fleurs’ family, friends, and the broader South African football community during this difficult time.”
The 24-year-old football player joined Chiefs from SuperSport United in October last year.
