Pretoria – Police have arrested two men and recovered a gun they believe was used in the fatal shooting of five-year-old, Ditebogo Junior Phalane, during the hijacking of his father’s vehicle in Soshanguve.
The arrests on Monday of the suspects aged 29 and 30 years bring to four the number of accused in police custody for the dastardly crime.
The suspects were arrested in Soshanguve and Atteridgeville by the Pretoria-based Hawks Tactical Operations Management Section, working together with the Arcasia Crime Prevention Unit and Tshwane District Crime Intelligence Unit.
Two unlicensed firearms were recovered.
“One of the firearms is alleged to be the murder weapon used in the murder of Ditebogo Phalane but that will be confirmed once the firearms have been sent for testing,” said Warrant Officer Wendy Nkabi.
“One of the suspects is believed to have been out on bail for alleged hijacking, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearm.
“Both suspects will make their first appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 22 May 2024.”
Ditebogo Junior, who was fatally shot as he ran to welcome his father home, was laid to rest last week on Friday.
