Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has uncovered an arms cache in Mayfair and arrested a resident who allegedly hired out the guns for a fee.
The cache included eight 9mm firearms, 14 magazines, and 557 live rounds of ammunition.
Acting on a tip-off the JMPD Tactical Response Unit (TRU) swooped on a residence in Mayfair on Sunday, (21 May 2024).
“Upon arrival, officers introduced themselves and requested permission to search the premises,” JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla
recounted late Wednesday.
“The resident granted permission for the search.
“During the search, officers discovered a cache of firearms and ammunition in the suspect’s bedroom.”
Superintendent Fihla said a Somalian, who was arrested at the residence, told the JMPD officers that individuals from Eldorado Park, Riverlea, and Westbury hired the guns from him for a fee of R1 500 for each gun.
The arrested suspect was taken to the Brixton Police Station.
“The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” said Superintendent Fihla.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to rid our streets of illegal firearms and other forms of crime.”
