Polokwane – Constable Fhatuwani Linda Makhoba – one of the three officers who perished in a collision while transporting awaiting-trial prisoners – has been laid to rest.

The funeral service for the 40-year-old constable was held on Saturday, 17 October 2026, at Ha-Ramantsha Village, Sinthumule, in the Vhembe District, Limpopo.

Family members, colleagues, dignitaries and community members gathered to bid farewell to the fallen officer.

Constable Makhoba tragically lost her life alongside two fellow police officers in a fatal road accident along the R524 Levubu Road in the Vhembe District on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, while transporting awaiting-trial prisoners.

Her two colleagues were laid to rest last week.

Delivering a eulogy, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, remembered Constable Makhoba as a dedicated member.

He described her passing as a painful loss to her family and colleagues.

Makhoba joined the SAPS as a trainee on 1 February 2020.

She was appointed as a constable the following year on 1 January 2021.

Lieutenant General Scheepers acknowledged her commitment to serving and protecting the people of South Africa, emphasising that although her policing career was cut tragically short, her contribution to the SAPS would always be remembered and respected.

Addressing the bereaved family, Lieutenant General Scheepers extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Provincial Management and the entire SAPS family in Limpopo.

He assured them of the organisation’s continued support during this difficult period.

The Provincial Commissioner urged police officers to support one another and show compassion toward colleagues, particularly during times of grief and hardship.

He said the strength of the SAPS should not only be about operational readiness, but also about the care, solidarity and respect members have for each other.

Concluding the eulogy, Lieutenant General Scheepers said: “Constable Makhoba, today the South African Police Service records its gratitude for your service.

“We honour you. We salute you. And with dignity and respect, we bid you farewell.”

He said the SAPS in Limpopo joins the Makhoba family, friends, colleagues and the community in mourning the loss of a dedicated officer who answered the call to serve her country.

The funeral service was attended by Deputy Provincial Commissioners Major General FM Sebola and Major General S.W. Mashava, Chief Director  Transport and Regulations T. Matsila, Vhembe District Commissioner Major General E.R.S. Van der Walt, senior SAPS management, representatives of organised labour, religious and traditional leaders, stakeholders and members of the community.
