RELEASED ON BAIL: Dr. Nomsa Masuku, IEC Deputy Chairperson faces fraud charges involving more than a million rand

Johannesburg – The Deputy Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Dr. Nomsa Masuku, appeared in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Palm Ridge on theft, fraud, and money laundering charges of R1.2 million.

The Hawks arrested the top IEC official before she appeared in court.

The alleged offences, which date back to 2014, were committed during Dr. Masuku’s tenure as head of Standard Bank’s Social Corporate Investments Programme, before her appointment at the IEC.

Dr. Masuku allegedly transferred a sum of R800 000 to a second individual implicated in the case.

The state alleges that she illicitly awarded bursaries worth R400 000 to ineligible recipients, including family members and friends.

The matter has been adjourned until 4 September 2024 to allow the state sufficient time to apprehend the outstanding suspect.

Dr. Masuku was released on R20 000 bail.

Meanwhile, the IEC said it was aware of the arrest of Commissioner Dr.  Masuku.

“It appears that the matter relates to her erstwhile employment and does not relate to her tenure in the Commission both as an employee and commissioner,” the IEC said.

“The Commission will monitor developments in the matter.”
