Durban – A woman in her 60s, who was mugged as she walked along the Athlone Bridge before she was pushed into the Umgeni River, has been rescued by Metro Police Search and Rescue.
Narrating events leading to the woman’s rescue, ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they were alerted of the incident at 06:15 Wednesday evening.
“ALS Paramedics were called to assist a patient who had suffered a near drowning after allegedly being robbed and pushed off Athlone Bridge into the Umgeni River north of Durban,” said Jamieson.
“Paramedics arrived on scene to find Metro Police Search and Rescue in attendance.
“Paramedics were shown to a female believed to be in her sixties who alleges that while walking along Athlone Drive she was robbed and then pushed off the bridge into the fast-flowing Umgeni River below.”
Jamieson said the Metro Police Search and Rescue division was able to save the woman.
