Pretoria – Thousands of Striking workers at the Ford Motor Company of SA in Silverton, east of Pretoria, were expected to return to work today, (Monday, 8 July 2024), after the company secured a court interdict against the work stoppage.

Last week, on Thursday, workers affiliated with the Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) embarked on a strike to press for bonuses and profit share.

However, on Friday Ford secured an interdict against the strike at the Labour Court.

The Labour Court also declared the strike “unlawful and unprotected”.

NUMSA said it would abide by the court order and workers were expected to return to the plant on Monday morning.

“NUMSA is an organisation established in terms of the law, we operate by way of the law… we respect the law,” NUMSA legal officer Vivani Shezi said after the court ruling on Friday.

Meanwhile, Ford SA spokesperson Minesh Bhagaloo urged workers to comply with the court order and warned that further production disruptions would negatively impact the company’s operations in South Africa.
