Johannesburg – South Africans are celebrating the gold medal won by swimmer Tatjana Smith in the 100-metre breaststroke race at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Monday.
Smith came from behind to beat China’s world champion Tang Qianting, who came in second to claim the silver medal.
Ireland’s Mona McSharry won bronze.
In the previous Tokyo 2021 Olympics Smith – under her maiden name of Schoenmaker – broke the record and won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke race.

Team SA now has three medals – bronze in the rugby Men’s Sevens and another bronze in the mountain bike cycling won by Alan Hatherly.
