Mothibistad – A police constable has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the Northern Cape.
The on-duty constable from the Mothibistad Police Station was arrested at the weekend for allegedly driving a state vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
The constable, who has not been named, has already appeared before the Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court on several charges including drunken driving, negligent and reckless driving.
The constable, whose drunken behaviour was caught on camera and posted on social media, has been released on bail.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola “welcomed” the constable’s arrest.
Internal South African Police Service disciplinary processes were underway.
“Police officers are meant to lead by example,” said Lieutenant General Otola.
“We do not expect the behaviour that has been depicted on a video from any of our members.
“We will ensure a thorough internal process is conducted into the behaviour of this police officer.
“We do not condone and will not allow such behaviour in our ranks.”
