HEALTH HAZARD: Fish are dying in the dirty Jukskei River
SHARE

Johannesburg – The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Friday warned Johannesburg residents that the Jukskei River’s water contamination poses a public health risk.

DA Councillor Annette Deppe, Johannesburg: Ward 132, said: “We urge the public to exercise caution and stay away from the Jukskei River to avoid health risks”.

She said over the past four days, “we have been retrieving between 30 to 40 dead fish per day from the Jukskei River and our local dams in Waterfall”.

Councillor Deppe added: “This disturbing event highlights the increasingly poor water quality in these bodies of water.

“Our water has never been this black and dirty, posing a significant environmental and public health concern.

“We will investigate the root cause of this alarming situation and take immediate action to mitigate the adverse effects on our ecosystem.

“We urge residents to avoid contact with the river and dam water until further notice.”
