Vosman – Police have arrested four suspected cash-in-transit robbers and recovered three AK47 rifles.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday while attempting a cash-in-transit heist along the R545 road in Vosman, near Emalahleni (formerly Witbank), Mpumalanga.
Unbeknownst to the would-be-armed robbers, police had been tipped off about the planned cash-in-transit heist.
Narrating events leading to the arrests, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said when the suspects noticed the police they sped off in different directions.
Colonel Mdhluli said the suspects were travelling in several cars including a charcoal SUV Kia, a blue BMW sedan, and a white Mercedes Benz sedan.
He said police cornered four of the suspects and arrested them.
“During the arrest, the suspects were found in possession of three AK-47 rifles with six magazines as well as 134 live ammunition, one 9mm pistol with two magazines, and 27 live ammunition,” Colonel Mdhluli said.
“The confiscated firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether these weapons were not previously used in the commission of crime elsewhere.
“Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspects as the investigation continues.”
The suspects will appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
