Dubai – In a remarkable achievement for African designers, United Arab Emirates-based Batsirai Madzonga has made headlines with the launch of his first Google font, the Sankofa Display font, which took him seven months to complete.
This milestone not only highlights Batsirai’s exceptional talent but also signifies a significant step forward for African representation in the global design community.
“I am so elated to have accomplished this feat. I finished the initial font in 2020 during Covid-19 lockdown era,” said the tech enthusiast, Batsirai.
“It had 180 glyphs. Google then picked it up and commissioned an extra 900 glyphs in Sep 2023. And now, the font is live.”
Google Fonts is a widely used resource by designers and developers around the world, and having a font included in this repository is a notable achievement.
Batsirai’s journey to this remarkable accomplishment began with a deep-seated passion for typography and design and this is a testament to his dedication to blending traditional African aesthetics with modern design principles.
His unique approach to typography has earned him recognition and respect within the global design community.
Batsirai said: “The Sankofa Display font emerged as a crucial component of the broader Sankofa Design System Project, which advocates for cultural diversity and inclusivity in digital design.
“The font encourages designers to draw from their backgrounds and heritage for inspiration, empowering them to create distinct, culturally resonant designs.”
His success serves as an inspiration to countless African designers striving to make their mark in the global arena and the journey underscores the importance of embracing one’s cultural roots while innovating in the field of design.
The creation of the font was a labour of love, involving meticulous research and design.
Drawing inspiration from African cultural motifs, Batsirai aimed to create a typeface that not only looked visually appealing but also resonated with the rich heritage of the continent.
The result is a font that embodies elegance, readability, and a touch of African identity.
Batsirai is not just a tech enthusiast, he is also a renowned author who has penned several books to promote the Shona language on a global scale.
Realising that children with Zimbabwean parents growing up in the diaspora are very disconnected from their heritage, Batsirai took it upon himself to educate their children through his books.
Madzonga’s first official Google font launch is a momentous occasion for Africa to pave the way for future designers.
His journey serves as a powerful reminder that passion, dedication, and cultural pride can lead to groundbreaking achievements.
Batsirai could not be outdone without a word to upcoming designers and had this to say, “Personal projects have been the cornerstone of my success.
“When a project is your own, you pour your heart and soul into it, producing your finest work.
“Take the leap and put yourself out there, you never know what incredible opportunities might arise.”
