Durban – Escaped convicted armed robber Dumisani Mthethwa has been re-arrested, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) announced Wednesday.
Mthethwa, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence for robbery with aggravated circumstances, escaped from the Waterval Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, (26 August 2024).

Confirming Mthethwa’s rearrest, DCS said: “The apprehension was successfully executed through the relentless efforts of our departmental officials”.
Mthethwa is scheduled to appear in court on charges related to his escape from lawful custody
“Additionally, his security classification will be reviewed, and he will be transferred to a different correctional facility to ensure heightened security measures,” the DCS said.
DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale commended officials for their dedicated work in securing Mthethwa’s re-arrest.
“A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape is underway and the findings will identify any lapses. Those found to be responsible will face appropriate consequences,” stated Thobakgale.
The safety and security of our correctional facilities are paramount for the Department of Correctional Services.
“We are taking all necessary measures to avert security breaches. Hence, the Department remains steadfast in its mission to apprehend those who escape from custody,” said Thobakgale.
“Escaping from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence, and those who aid in such acts shall be spared no mercy.”
