Durban – Maskandi musician Mongezi Jama – known to fans as “Mayoghurt” or “iBliss kaZwelonke” – is making waves in the genre, which earned him a spot on the new season of Mzansi Magic’s Short and Sweet
The 22-year-old artist, who was raised in uMzimkhulu, in KwaZulu-Natal, is taking Maskandi music by storm and appears on the popular show.
His unique height, sound, and captivating stage presence set him apart from other musicians in the genre.
Speaking to The Bulrushes, Mayoghurt recalls how he was inspired by many other musicians before he took up the craft in 2018.
He says supportive people also played a huge role in getting his music career off the ground.
Mayoghurt may be diminutive, but he says he has always had big dreams.
“If I’m being honest, my height does have a lot of influence because people who are short like me are loved by the communities because they’re different,” he says.
“My songs have various meanings and messages that impact the lives of people which I think is the reason why it is different to other music.”
Mayoghurt has gained a massive following on all social media platforms.
Producers of the television show Short and Sweet noticed Mayoghurt’s talents and invited him to feature on the show.
Mayoghurt has been featured by Dulas Magube as part of the show, a move that has helped him attract more fans and followers on social media.
Mayoghurt was also invited to perform at the Mpucuzeko Maskandi Festival and Umbuso Wamaciko MaskandI Festival, where he showed his energy and charisma on stage.
Mayoghurt’s career is just beginning, but he is already making waves.
With his unique blend of traditional Maskandi sound and creative style, he attracts fans all over and more opportunities to collaborate with other artists.
“My next project will be collaborating with other artists who are in big and already in the industry,” he says.
