Johannesburg – Seven scientists from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have been recognised among the World’s Top 2% of Scientists for 2024.
This list, compiled by Elsevier and Stanford University using data from Scopus, highlights researchers making significant contributions in their respective fields.
“Being named in the Top 2% signifies global recognition for research excellence and enhances a scientist’s reputation within academia and industry,” the UJ said in a statement on Tuesday, (8 October 2024).
“This distinction can open doors to increased funding, collaborations, and speaking opportunities at international conferences.
“Additionally, the ranking provides visibility across diverse disciplines, showcasing work that may otherwise remain underappreciated.”
The top scientists representing UJ include:
- Prof Samuel Oluwatobi Oluwafemi
- Prof Reinout Meijboom
- Prof Philiswa Nomngongo
- Prof Omotayo Arotiba
- Prof Kriveshini Pillay
- Prof Friedrich Bickelhaupt (Distinguished Visiting Professor)
- Prof Suprakas Sinha Ray (Distinguished Visiting Professor)
The UJ explained that the methodology used for this ranking includes a C-score, which factors in total citations, the h-index, and citations with and without self-citations.
Scientists are evaluated across 22 fields and 176 subfields, with both career-long and single-year performance assessed.
Professor Annah Moteetee, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science (UJ), pointed out the significance of this achievement saying: “As the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, I am delighted to have learned that seven of our researchers in the Department of Chemical Sciences, including two Distinguished Vising Professors, are among the top 2% globally, as ranked by Stanford-Elsevier.
“This prestigious recognition highlights the world-class research being conducted at UJ and underscores the significant contributions our faculty members are making to the global scientific community.
“Their impact not only elevates the reputation of our faculty but also strengthens our position as leaders in scientific advancement on the global stage.
