Mahikeng – Police are investigating a road rage incident in which two men fatally stabbed each other on Saturday afternoon in the Mahikeng Central Business District.
Recounting events leading to the tragic deaths, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said: “The police were summoned at approximately 13:30, to the scene at Martin Street, where two men, aged 32 and 34, allegedly stabbed each other”.
Brigadier Mokgwabone added: “The police found on arrival, a man lying on the ground and bleeding from the neck.
“The ambulance was called, but paramedics declared the man dead.
“It was further established that the other man whose relatives transported him to hospital, also died.”
Brigadier Mokgwabone said an investigation into the matter was underway.
The police spokesperson said the motive was yet to be established although it appears that the fight ensued following an argument for a parking lot.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello condemned the incident.
He urged motorists to exercise patience and resolve their differences peacefully rather than resorting to violence.
Meanwhile, the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West on Monday, (14 October 2024), condemned the violence and called for a speedy resolution.
Convenor of the MRM Provincial Interim Committee, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele said: ”This barbaric… shocking incident not only undermines the progress that the taxi industry under the leadership of SANTACO [South African National Taxi Council] has registered in restoring calm and establishing an image of a peaceful and non-violent sector”.
Pastor Kgwele said that commuters shouldn’t be ferried by industry taxi drivers who exhibit high levels of violence and intolerance.
“The industry must therefore redouble effort to rid it of the culture of violence.”
He said the October Transport Month must be used to promote safer, reliable and efficient public as well as scholar transport.
“We will therefore avail ourselves to partner with SANTACO to jointly lead a cleansing ceremony at the crime scene, prayer against the demonic spirit of violence as well as the signing of a pledge committing to peaceful co-existence and non-violence among industry players.”
