Sun City – South African Police Service (SAPS) Sergeant Nombi Bokamoso Peter has been named overall winner in the legal sector category at the 13th South African Heroine Awards Ceremony.
The annual awards honour and celebrate women making a difference in society.
This year, the awards were on Saturday evening, (2 November 2024), at Sun City Resort, North West.
Sergeant Peter is a detective within the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Investigations unit in the Free State.
She is also attached to the Manguang district serial rapist task team.
Sergeant Peter hails from Thaba Nchu in the Free State and holds a BA degree in Forensic Investigation and a Diploma in Policing and Human Resources Management.
Sergeant Peter, a survivor of rape at the age of nine, says the traumatic incident led her to pursue a career as a detective in the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Investigations unit.
“I want to do more for victims of GBVF [Gender-Based Violence and Femicide]. I want to put more rapists behind bars,” said Sergeant Peter.
“I’ve managed to put 32 to time in prison, some are serving life sentences.
“I have achieved more than 330 years [in prison] for rapists and I promise the community that I serve that I will do more.”
Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya has, on behalf of all the men and women in blue, congratulated Sergeant Peter for walking away as the overall winner in the legal sector category at the 13th South African Heroine Awards Ceremony.
“We are immensely proud of both Detective Sergeant Peter,” said Lieutenant General Sibiya.
“This is an example of the pockets of excellence that exist in the SAPS, especially in the detective environment.”
