Johannesburg – Police have arrested 24 Pakistanis in Fordsburg and recovered counterfeit goods valued at more than R2 million.

“This week, the South African Police Service (SAPS), alongside its crime-fighting partners, seized counterfeit items valued more than R2 million in Fordsburg,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk.

“Twenty-three Pakistani nationals were arrested during the operation for the contravention of the Immigration Act while another Pakistani national was arrested for dealing in counterfeit goods.

“The takedown was led by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit joined by the Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Goods Unit, SAPS Operational Response Services, Department of Home Affairs, South African Revenue Services, Customs, Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), Brand Protectors and Crime Prevention Wardens.”

Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk said the operation was executed on Friday, (8 November 2024), under a search and seizure warrant that targeted a shopping mall on Terrace Road, Fordsburg.

“More than 8 000 counterfeit items were confiscated, including; cellphones, cellphone accessories, and electronics,” said Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk.

“Illicit electronic items were also confiscated by officials from ICASA for non-compliance.

“The SAPS, along with its partners, is committed to eradicating the illegal trade of counterfeit goods to safeguard consumers, legitimate businesses, and the economy of this country.”
