Schweizer-Reneke – Former acting municipal managers for the Mamusa Local Municipality in the North West, 50-year-old Mothusi Oagile and 53-year-old Leopold Letlhogonolo Fourie, have been arrested and hauled before a court for corruption.
The pair was arrested Thursday morning, (21 November 2024), by the Hawks.
Soon after their arrest, Oagile and Fourie appeared before the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court for allegedly contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act.
Oagile and Fourie were accused of irregularly appointing two security companies.
They allegedly failed to follow supply chain processes during their tenures as acting municipal managers for the Mamusa Local Municipality.
Allegations are that Oagile, appointed as the acting municipal manager from November 2016 to March 2017, irregularly appointed Ipelegeng Protection Services to render security services to Mamusa Local Municipality without following proper processes.
As a result, the municipality suffered a loss amounting to R969 000.
Fourie, who was appointed Oagile’s successor, terminated the services of Ipelegeng security company.
Fourie allegedly breached the same rules as
Oagile when he appointed Triumph security company to replace Ipelegeng.
As a result, the municipality suffered another loss of R450 000.
When the matter came to light it was referred to the Klerksdorp-based Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit for investigation.
The investigation led to the arrest of the accused, before they appeared in court, where they were released on bail.
Oagile was granted R6 000 bail, while Fourie was granted R3 000.
Their matter was adjourned to 20 February 2025.
