Pretoria – The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Pretoria hosted a grand reception at the Sheraton Hotel to commemorate the 53rd UAE National Day.
This prestigious event brought together senior officials from the South African government, ambassadors, high commissioners, business leaders, academics, civil society representatives, media professionals, and members of the South African community.
A Shared Legacy of Partnership
His Excellency Mahash Saeed Alhameli, UAE Ambassador to South Africa, warmly welcomed distinguished guests, including representatives from South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

In his address, H.E. Alhameli reflected on the significant milestones achieved since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1994.
He emphasised the deep-rooted friendship and growing collaboration between the two nations, which continue to serve as a beacon of constructive international relations.
As 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the UAE and South Africa, it also coincides with South Africa’s celebration of three decades of democracy.
This dual milestone underscores the profound historical ties and shared aspirations for progress and prosperity.
Strengthening Economic and Strategic Relations
Nelia Barnard, a senior representative of the South African government, delivered an eloquent address, underscoring the importance of the bilateral partnership.

Barnard stated: “This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate three decades of diplomatic relations with the UAE, coinciding with 30 years of our democracy.
“These anniversaries reaffirm our shared commitment to building a dynamic and flourishing partnership.
“The UAE’s early recognition of democratic South Africa in 1994 laid the groundwork for a robust bilateral relationship.
“Over the years, high-level engagements, including the recent discussions between President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi at the G20 Summit in Brazil, demonstrate the strategic importance of our partnership.”
Economically, the UAE has cemented its position as South Africa’s largest trading partner in the Middle East, with bilateral trade reaching R120 billion in 2023.
South African exports accounted for R47 billion, while imports from the UAE totaled ZAR 73 billion.
Notable investments by UAE firms, such as DP World’s acquisition of Imperial Logistics for R12.7 billion and AMEA Power’s USD180 million solar project in Limpopo, have driven job creation and fostered socioeconomic development.
Expanding Multilateral Cooperation
The UAE’s recent inclusion as a full member of BRICS in January 2024 marks a transformative moment in global multilateralism.

The representative added: “South Africa warmly welcomed the UAE into BRICS and is confident that its participation will further enrich the bloc’s inclusivity and cooperative spirit”.
The shared commitment of both nations to dialogue, peace, and sustainable development underscores the strength of their partnership.
Plans for the fourth meeting of the Joint Committee for Cooperation in 2025 are expected to deepen collaboration across diverse sectors.
Innovation, Diplomacy, and Shared Vision
The UAE’s global leadership in innovation and science diplomacy was also highlighted, with both countries exploring opportunities in space exploration, renewable energy, and digital connectivity.
The representative reaffirmed a shared commitment to addressing critical global challenges, including climate change and peacebuilding efforts.
South Africa also values the UAE’s principled stance on regional issues, particularly the Palestinian question.
The representative reiterated South Africa’s advocacy for a just, equitable two-state solution, in accordance with international law, with East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.
Celebrating Achievements
The event concluded on a festive note, with attendees enjoying a cultural celebration and a raffle draw that awarded air tickets to two lucky winners.
The gathering was a testament to the enduring friendship between South Africa and the UAE.
Together they celebrated the UAE’s remarkable achievements over the past 53 years while reinforcing a shared vision for a prosperous and harmonious future.
On behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the government, and the people of South Africa, heartfelt congratulations were extended to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the government, and the people of the UAE on this auspicious occasion said Nelia Barnard
