Durban – Prince Ndabuko Zulu has tendered his resignation as mayor of AmaJuba District Municipality, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) announced on Thursday, (19 December 2024), that the mayor had agreed to resign.
“The IFP NEC today met with the Mayor of AmaJuba District Municipality, Cllr. Prince Ndabuko Zulu,” the party said in a terse statement attributed to Mkhuleko Hlengwa, the national spokesperson.
“Following deliberations, the NEC resolved to request the mayor to step down with immediate effect.
“Accordingly Prince Ndabuko Zulu has tendered his resignation as mayor.
“This decision has been taken in the collective interest of AmaJuba District.”
Asked by The Bulrushes why Prince Zulu had been asked to step down as mayor, the IFP simply referred to its statement, which did not give any reasons.
However, previous media reports suggested that the mayor was being investigated for possible wrongdoing regarding a contract linked to the construction of a reinforced concrete reservoir.
The IFP said it, “extends its gratitude to Cllr. Prince Ndabuko Zulu for his dedicated service and leadership during his tenure”.
Following Prince Ndabuko Zulu’s resignation, Deputy Mayor Thembelihle Mthembu will act as mayor until further notice.
“The party’s relevant committees will oversee the process of filling the mayoral vacancy,” the IFP said.
Meanwhile, the municipality has assured residents that the mayor’s resignation will not disrupt service delivery.
