Johannesburg – The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has arrested a gang of suspected thugs – aged between 26 and 38 years – and recovered unlicensed firearms and live ammunition in Daveyton, Benoni.
EMPD, Eastern Region Task Team officers, arrested four male suspects on Wednesday, (8 January 2025), at about 09:30.
Narrating events leading to the arrest, the City of Ekurhuleni said the EMPD officers received a tip-off about a gang of suspects travelling in a white Toyota Avanza with false registration number plates.
The gang was allegedly terrorising the community of Mina Nawe informal settlement.
“The officers went on a manhunt and spotted the vehicle with four occupants including the driver at the corner of Buffalo and Brazil Road in Mayfield,” the City said.
“As the officers carried out their routine investigations on the vehicle and its occupants, it was discovered that the driver had no driver’s licence and the vehicle’s [licence] disc was fraudulent.
“The officers searched all the occupants and the vehicle and that is when two unlicensed 9mm firearms with filed-off file numbers and seven live rounds were discovered.”

The suspects were arrested and taken to Putfontein Police Station.
“Further investigations are underway to determine if there can be more charges pressed against the four men,” the City said.
