Moloto – Burnt books and ruined furniture were all that was left after a fire gutted the administration block at Peter Mokaba Primary School in Moloto, near KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga.

Locals suspect the fire that broke out at the weekend was an arson attack, on Saturday morning, (8 February 2025).

Mpumalanga Education MEC Cathy Dlamini visited the school on Monday, (10 February 2025), where she found – despite the fire damage – that teaching and learning were in progress.

While inspecting the fire damage the MEC was informed that the food for the school feeding scheme food stored in the administration block had been destroyed.

Mpumalanga education spokesperson Jasper Zwane said temporary measures were being put in place to enhance teaching and learning before dealing with the permanent solution to the damage.

“The purpose of the visit was for the MEC to receive a report on the fire that damaged the school’s administration and to take stock of the current state of affairs at the school,” said Zwane.

MEC Dlamini also engaged with the school management and the school governing body about remedial measures that would ensure uninterrupted learning and teaching

“As an interim remedial measure, the department will secure a mobile office to ensure that the administration activities of the School are not compromised,” Zwane said.

“So far, teaching and learning progressed well today.

“In addition, the department is consolidating a process of replacing the food supplies and other items that were lost in the fire.

“The department will continue to support the school and to monitor the developments very closely.”

Police told The Bulrushes that a case of arson was reported at KwaMhlanga Police Station.

Police said they had not made any arrests, and their investigations into the arson complaint were continuing.
