Cape Town – Tevolution Museum recently hosted an educational tour for students of the Delft community in Cape Town
On Friday, (28 February 2025), Hisense Tevolution Museum, in collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, hosted an educational tour of its facilities for the students from Masibambisane High School in Delft, a community facing significant socio-economic challenges today.
The event aimed to introduce students to the rich tradition of Chinese paper-cutting art and the history of television broadcasting in South Africa, with the goal of building cultural bridges and expanding their horizons.
Li Zonghua, a renowned teacher from the Yuchen Scholarship Programme in China provided an overview of the history and cultural importance of paper cutting, this was followed by a live demonstration in which he taught the students how to create their own intricate paper-cutting designs.
Students also had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on practice session, where they could develop their own designs, with one-on-one support to help them improve their techniques.
The students also had an opportunity to listen to a informative lecture on broadcasting history and television in South Africa by Tina-Louise Smit, a lecturer and PhD Candidate at UCT’s Centre for Film and Media Studies.
“More companies need to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds with the opportunity to experience something outside their daily reality,” explains Alex Chen, Brand Marketing Manager at Hisense SA.
“By offering access to these educational and creative experiences, such as traditional Chinese culture and the fascinating history of television in South Africa, we aimed to inspire the next generation, expand their cultural awareness, and help them dream beyond their circumstances.”
Through initiatives such as this one, Hisense SA aims to foster a deeper connection between South Africa and China.
The event served as a meaningful way to bring cultures together, in hopes that it will inspire a future of collaboration, mutual respect, and shared growth.
The Tevolution Museum, which recently launched, is now also open to the general public.
Visitors can explore the museum at no charge, on 42 Long Street, Cape Town, from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
