Johannesburg – Protest action by disgruntled Ekurhuleni Metro cops has resulted in a massive traffic jam along the R21.
The early morning Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) R21 protest on Wednesday, (19 March 2025), that began Southbound between Bapsfontein Rd and OR Tambo, was a move to press for better wages.
A protestor said: “Today we are going to Germiston. All officers. A memorandum of demands was handed over to the Chief of Police. And was given until yesterday to respond.
“There’s been nothing said by the Chief of Police”.
Asked to comment on the matter, City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said: “We have been made aware of the situation as a city through the media and public complaints.
“We are sourcing more information and will issue a formal communique as soon as details are available”.
Last month, EMPD officers said they were unhappy with the overtime cap that had been imposed.
At the time the Ekurhuleni traffic cops were refusing to attend to car crashes.
However, a metro cop taking part in the protest said: “We are demanding salary adjustment. Not overtime.”
The protesting metro cops were driving at a snail’s pace as they made their way to the Germiston Civic Centre, where they would again hand over a memorandum.
Other roads have also been affected by the metro cop protest.
