Johannesburg – The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the return of Load-shedding brings “more economic devastation” and “leaves families across our country in turmoil”.

The DA’s comments were in response to Eskom’s evening announcement on Wednesday, (19 March 2025), that it was implementing Stage 2 load-shedding.

“While we have made notable progress in our generation recovery efforts, Eskom faced the loss of five generation units before the peak period,” said Eskom Spokesperson Daphne Mokwena.

“Consequently, Stage 2 load-shedding was implemented at 18:25 and will remain in effect until 5:00 tomorrow.

“In light of the ongoing system constraints, we urge the public to use electricity sparingly.”

However, Kevin Mileham MP and DA Spokesperson on Electricity & Energy said: “The Democratic Alliance (DA) sees tonight’s unannounced return of load-shedding as an emergency act, that will bring more economic devastation and will leave families across our country in turmoil tonight”.

Mileham added: “The DA shares in the outrage of all South Africans at this bout of Load-shedding with zero notice.

“We stand together in outrage.

“This shows the incontrovertible need for a competitive energy generation market.”

Mileham said the DA was calling for Eskom’s immediate horizontal unbundling to break its monopoly and end its ongoing failure to meet South Africa’s electricity needs.

“South Africa needs new generation capacity to be built now,” said Mileham.

“This is an immediate and pressing concern for our nation.”

Meanwhile, Eskom said it “sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and will continue to provide updates as required”.
