Cape Town – Three cyclists from a BMX club in Limpopo have completed their epic journey of 1 741 km from Burgersfort to Cape Town, in a bid to raise awareness of GBV and youth empowerment.
Two weeks after they embarked on the journey, brave cyclists Gauta Mahlakoane, Karabo Mokoo, and Maxwell Ndou arrived in Cape Town on Monday, (14 April 2025), where they were received by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
“Welcome to Cape Town, Gauta, Maxwell, and Karabo… You made it,” said Mayor Hill-Lewis when the cyclists arrived in the Mother City.
“We are proud to celebrate this achievement. Let’s support their mission to pedal positive change,” the Western Cape Government said.
The cycling feat for GBV awareness and youth empowerment has even earned the praise of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“On behalf of the South African government and its people I congratulate cyclists Gauta Mahlakoane, Maxwell Ndou and Karabo Mokoo for safely completing a first and unique historic tour from their hometown of Burgersfort, Limpopo Province to Cape Town, Western Cape Province, on an arduous adventure of 13 days and 1741 km of pedaling on their BMX bicycles,” said President Ramaphosa
“Your ambition to succeed against all odds has captivated the nation and this feat of human endurance has awoken the possibilities of what one will achieve when setting their sights to greatness.
“As a peloton you triumphed over adversity and the journey from Burgersfort to Cape Town fueled our Ubuntu human connection that defines South Africa.”
President Ramaphosa said in the spirit of solidarity, the people of South Africa not only cheered the team on when passing through their communities, but they also responded to the cyclists’ needs by raising awareness about the BMX Gauta Team club and their advocacy for young people to stay off alcohol, drugs, and gangsterism.
“South Africa admires and values the youthful exuberant self-starting initiative you espoused that has inspired this and many generations to come,” he said.
