Pretoria – The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department reports that it responded to several car crashes that occurred in different parts of the municipality on Good Friday.

“One of the incidents occurred just after midnight on the N1/N14 interchange in Centurion, where a car had overturned, and firefighting and rescue operations resources were dispatched from Centurion Fire Station and responded with a fire engine to the scene,” the department said.

“On arrival, the firefighters found out that a light motor vehicle was involved, and five patients were on the scene and were being treated for minor to life-threatening injuries.

“One of the patients was trapped, and although firefighters performed extrication techniques to free him from the wreckage, sadly, he had already succumbed to the injuries because of the crash.”

Gauteng Emergency Medical Services and private emergency medical services treated and transported the rest of the patients to Kalafong Hospital.

The scene was then handed over to the South African Police Service.

“Another incident happened in the morning at about 06:39 on the N4 near the Sasol Garage, in Bronkhorstspruit, where two minibus taxis were involved in a collision,” the department said.

“One patient was trapped and was rescued by firefighters from Bronkhorstspruit Fire Station.

“A total of five patients who had sustained serious injuries (including the one that was trapped) were transported to Bronkhorstspruit Hospital by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.”

The Tshwane Metro Police Department and the National Traffic Police Department were on scene.

“In a third incident, a motorbike and light motor vehicle were involved in a collision at the corner of Pierneef Street and 29th Avenue in Villieria at about 10:27,” the department said.

“The motorcyclist sadly lost his life on impact because of the crash.”

The Emergency Communication Centre dispatched firefighters from Innesdale Fire Station and Central Fire Station, who responded with a rapid intervention unit, a video unit and a district commanders’ unit to the scene.

“They used rescue tools to perform extrication and free the driver of the light motor vehicle who had sustained serious injuries and was trapped because of the collision,” the department said.

“He was treated and transported by private ambulance to Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital.”

The South African Police Service and Tshwane Metro Police Department were on the scene and assisted with incident management.

The causes of the accidents have not yet been determined.

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department said it remains on high alert and is encouraging all motorists and other road users to be alert and to exercise caution on the road during the Easter Holidays.

To report any fire or rescue incident members of the public are encouraged to call 107 toll-free or alternatively to call 012 358 6300/6400.

When reporting an emergency, please remain calm, speak clearly, know where you are to give the correct address, and give your correct contact number to allow the operator to phone you back should they require to do so.
