Belfast – Five people died in a head-on collision along the N4 road in Belfast, outside Middleburg, in Mpumalanga, on Good Friday eve – before the start of the Easter holiday.
The collision occurred in misty conditions between a white SUV and a bakkie of similar colour.

Reports from the crash scene on Thursday, (17 April 2025), said the deceased included occupants from both vehicles. Three other persons sustained serious injuries.
Details of the deceased have been withheld until their next of kin have been traced and informed of the tragedy.
Despite repeated warnings from authorities for motorists to obey road rules, especially during the Easter holiday, suggestions were that reckless and negligent driving may have caused the deadly collision.

Commenting on the horror crash, Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie said: “We are deeply saddened by this development as the crash happened hours after our Easter Road Safety Activation on the same route.
“We have identified the N4 toll road as one of the priority routes based on the number of crashes that were recorded during the previous holiday seasons.”
The MEC urged motorists to exercise patience and fully adhere to traffic regulations.
“We are again appealing for adherence to the rules and increased tolerance among road users,” said MEC Macie.
“We are also pleading with motorists to always adjust their driving in line with prevailing weather conditions.”
