Johannesburg – A South African luxury train owned by Rovos Rail headed to Victoria Falls with at least 47 international tourists has collided with a goods train outside Gwanda.
The collision occurred on Good Friday, (18 April 2025).
There have been no reports of fatalities, but the injured have been ferried to local hospitals.
Responding to an email query regarding the train collision from The Bulrushes, Rovos Rail said: “Thank you for contacting Rovos Rail. Please allow us some time to review your inquiry and allocate it to one of our team members, who will be in touch as soon as possible.”
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) released a statement saying: “We have been inundated with inquiries concerning the collision of two trains in Gwanda today.
“We inform the nation that NRZ does not operate on that line as it is privately controlled.
“More so, the two trains are privately operated, therefore have no mandate to speak on behalf of the organisations involved.
“However, we join the nation in wishing those injured a speedy recovery.”
The goods train involved in the collision is owned by the Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway.
