Johannesburg – The fire that broke out at the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit has been contained and all patients have been evacuated safely.
The Gauteng Department of Health said the Accident and Emergency Unit caught fire late afternoon on Saturday, (19 April 2025).
“We can report that there were no injuries or casualties reported as a result of the fire incident.,”‘ the department said.
“Thanks to the rapid response of hospital staff and emergency personnel, all patients were safely evacuated to secure areas within the hospital.”
The department said firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services were on site attending to the fire incident.
“‘They are mopping up the fire after containing it, assessing the extent of the immediate physical damage and re-assessing and recounting patients that were at the affected area,” the department said.
“It is important to assure the public and families whose loved ones are receiving treatment at the hospital that the fire only affected the Accident and Emergency Unit and not other wards. “
The department said the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital was not receiving patients and will remain on divert until further notice.
The rest of the hospital remains operational.
“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” the department said.
“The public will be kept updated on any developments about the situation.”
