London – Power has been restored in most parts of Portugal and Spain where a state of emergency was declared in both countries.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said: “We have never had a complete collapse of the system”.
The outage on Monday, (28 April 2025), also affected France and disrupted the internet in Morocco but only briefly.

Today, 99 percent of power returned to homes in Spain, while 100 percent restored in Portugal as officials try to find the cause of the outage.
The mass blackout caused concern and brought chaos to millions of lives.
A resident of Valencia, Hassan Kassem, said: “I discovered you can’t do anything without power.
“As much as we think AI and technology are advancing, basic things like using your phone and cooking rely on power.”
Traffic came to a halt, as well as trains; hospitals and flights were impacted, and so many more day-to-day ordinary life activities were affected.
Play at the Madrid Open was also suspended.
Many people slept on the streets overnight and in the underground at train stations, losing contact with loved ones.
As for now, the cause of the outage remains under investigation, and the Portuguese energy company Redes Energeticas Nacionais asked people not to speculate on what caused the outage, such as a cyber-attack or atmospheric phenomenon.
As for Spain, the King is chairing a security meeting to discuss how this came about to happen in both countries.
After the power outage, hundreds of flights between Spain and Portugal have been cancelled, with Lisbon being the most impacted airport, with 45 percent of flights grounded.
Train travel within Spain chaos continues.
Countries like the UK are looking into how to deal with ‘challenges and threats’ after the Iberian outages.
