Johannesburg – A 33-year-old man suspected of unlawfully dealing in gold around Sandringham has been arrested after police recovered 600 grams of the precious metal and R300 000 in cash.
The recovered gold has an estimated value of R900 000.
Narrating events leading to the arrest on Thursday, 22 May 2025), Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo said: “Information was received about a suspect, who is allegedly dealing in illicit gold around Sandringham”.
Lieutenant Colonel Singo said the police followed up on the information and the suspect was spotted driving along Swindler Road and Lee Street.
“The police stopped the vehicle and searched it,” recalled Lieutenant Colonel Singo.
“During the search of the vehicle, police discovered 5 grams of illicit gold and R8100 cash.
“The suspect led the police to another property at Sandler Street, and upon arrival, the property was searched and 600 grams of illicit gold was discovered as well as a cash amount of R300 000.”
Lieutenant Colonel Singo said gold with an estimated value of R900 000, and the cash was seized by the police.
The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, has commended the multidisciplinary team for arresting the suspect.
The team comprised the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, Johannesburg, and Benoni K9 units.
The suspect will appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, (26 May 2025).
