Cape Town – The battle for spots in the Growthpoint SA Nationals squash championships delivered a weekend of thrilling contests as players from across the country fought for the honour of qualifying for South Africa’s premier individual domestic squash event.

While some results followed the script, several matches went down to the wire, reflecting the depth and competitiveness of the field.

Dewald van Niekerk.

After intense action across the regional hubs, the final eight women and eight men who will compete in the Nationals finale at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront Maker’s Landing from August 28 to 30 have been decided.

Nowhere was the fierce competition more evident than in Cape Town, where three deciding matches stretched to five games, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats.

Alex Commins

Defending women’s champion Alex Commins underlined her dominance with a commanding 3-0 win over Juanette le Roux, but elsewhere, the road to qualification was far more dramatic.

In the WP Hub One tournament, SA Country Districts’ Luke van Vuuren staged a remarkable comeback to beat Northerns’ Jarrod Cousins, overturning a 2-0 deficit.

Cousins refused to go quietly, but Van Vuuren clinched the deciding fifth game 11-8 to secure his spot.

In the second Cape Town hub, it was an all-Western Province showdown as Devon Osborne was pushed to the brink by Migael Lombard. After letting a 2-0 lead slip, Osborne had to dig deep in the fifth game, eventually prevailing 11-6.

The women’s final in this hub also delivered a classic, as experienced Northerns player Kimberley McDonald edged rising star Dene van Zyl in another five-game thriller.

Van Zyl fought back to level the match at 2-2, taking the fourth game 11-7, but McDonald kept her cool to seal the fifth 11-8.

JP Brits

In Gqeberha, there were more straightforward outcomes as top seeds Dewald van Niekerk (SA Country Districts) and Hayley Ward (Eastern Province) progressed with comfortable wins over Gerard Mitchell and Jacqui Ryder, both from Eastern Province.

Van Niekerk, a four-time defending national champion, once again showcased his quality and composure.

His presence in the Cape Town draw confirms him as the man to beat when the country’s elite gather for the Growthpoint Nationals’ iconic all-glass court showdown in August.
