Vryheid – At least 10 people died in the middle of the night when a bus collided with a truck along the R34 near Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal.

“Just after midnight, we received a report from our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate informing us about a horrific head-on collision involving a truck and a bus,” KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said in the early hours of Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

MEC Duma said sadly, 10 passengers died, and many others suffered severe injuries.

He said at least 10 passengers were rushed to a hospital and 22 others had minor injuries.

Both drivers of the bus and the truck survived the horror crash and were also taken to hospitals.

MEC Duma said the R34, near Vryheid, had been closed to enable emergency services to provide quality care to the surviving passengers.

“At 2 am, the scene is still active, and we request motorists along the R34 Vryheid to be patient,” MEC Duma said

“Importantly, we are establishing facts around reports that the bus was transporting supporters of a political party.”

Reports from the hospital indicate that two persons succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to 12.
